Alamitos Bay, Long Beach

I used to do a lot of deep-sea and ocean fishing for years but for some reason I lost my enthusiasm for them after I retired. I still do fresh water fishing which I find more relaxing. The catch is not as plentiful but the scenery, depending on where you fish, more than make up for it.

Last Sunday, I was at Alamitos Bay and I saw one of the fishing boats I used to take when I go ocean fishing return from a half day of fishing. It rekindled a desire in me to go ocean fishing again!

This is the boat returning from a half day of fishing

I observed most of the debarking fishermen did not have their gunny sacks filled with fish. This is not unusual at this particular landing. Their rates are low and the parking is free but their boats do not go as far and as deep as the other landings do for the big ones.

These are battery powered boats you can rent ($60/hour) to cruise the bay

I used to dream of owning a sailboat like that to sail across the Pacific Ocean. It is still a dream but it is not going to happen - I can't afford to own one, I do not know how to sail, and my wife will kill me before I kill myself sailing solo across the open sea LOL.

That is a saliva watering sailboat! Some boat owners live aboard their boats instead of renting an apartment or owning a home. Like turtles, they take their homes with them wherever they go LOL. Isn't that a fun way to live until you settle down and raise a family?

Nice shots! I don't even know where the Alamitos Bay in Long Beach is hahaha, is it close to Queen Mary? I remember my former boss in Hawaii, he travelled Hawaii from California just by his yacht. He even sailed to different countries. I can't imagine myself doing that, so scary. Yes, you are right, my boss (ex) was living in his own yacht when he was working in Hawaii and we would have us go to have our engineering meeting on his boat, in front of waikiki and watching the sunset after the meeting....hmmm those were the days....now I'm missing it because of your post hahaha. Looking forward to more of your posts.

kcatwoman, thanks for dropping by.

Sardonyx, Alamitos Bay is far south of where the Queen Mary is permanently berth. It is very close to Seal Beach.

Did you know that some boat owners allow their boats to be slept in like hotels on a per day basis? When I was still working, we had an overnight conference in San Francisco. All of us checked in at a hotel except for one, who made an earlier arrangement to spend the night in a boat anchored at the wharf. He said he paid less for his night's stay than we did at our hotel.

I've seen that Queen Mary ship from afar when my relatives in LA brought us to Long Beach years ago. It was turned into a hotel or some tourist spot, isn't it?

That sailboat on your last photo really looks gorgeous.

The Queen Mary was turned into a hotel, a museum, a venue for big occasions, restaurants, theatre and I don't know what else. However, as far as I know, it is still not making the money for the city of LB that it was projected to do.

Look at all those boats! It's as if people are ready to set sail anytime. Nice shots.

Some of those boats in the marina hardly go out to sea...well, maybe a couple of times or so a year LOL. Thanks for dropping by.

The yachts look lovely! I envy you, Deep sea fishing is what I want to do someday!

It is not a big deal here. Just go to any sport fishing landing here, get your fishing license and board the boat for a half-day, full-day, or two to 10 days of fishing. Depends on how much you want to spend and which fishing venue you go to.

I heard there are places in Zambales where you can hire boats and they will take you far out from shore to do your fishing. I guess it is more organized here though - just call in to reserve a spot and go; even if you do not have any fishing gears, you can rent them on board. It is fun, try it!

i went to Long Beach at night. i didn't see these. maganda pala pag morning. i went to a large boat... i think it was an old cruise. :)

bertN said...

Reena, actually Alamitos Bay is south of where the Queen Mary is permanently berth (I am guessing this is the large ship you were referring to. You probably saw Long Beach marina and the Shoreline Village at night. Maganda rin, hindi ba?

baka nga sa queen mary kami nagpunta. :) wala akong makita sa gabi eh. hehehe.... based on your photos, i like it netter sa morning. parang movie setting kasi. :)

Bakit gabi kayo nagpasyal? Okey din sa gabi, kaya lang you'll miss a lot (as you did).

I lived near the sea (in Agusan del Norte) in my younger years and once my brother and I thought how exciting would be it living on a boat - and also cruising to neighboring countries across a sailboat. But in reality, only rich people can afford such hobby especially if you're based here in the Philippines. For now, our interest focused into motorcycles and photography. The boat dream didn't materialize yet but can probably be pushed through on our retirement years :) Sana nga...

I agree with those comments above. The sceneries looks like in a movie setting. Looks gorgeous...

I'd love to try that battery-powered boat's too!

I'm sure it saves boat owners more money by living there like it is a house boat.

dodong flores, I share your interest in photography (although I have a lot of learning to do in this field and I am too lazy to do it) but as far as motorcycling, I'd rather have something more exciting between my legs LOL. Okay lang yung bisikleta sa akin pero pag motorcycle na, I'll be treading outside my comfort zone, ika nga.

Keep your boat dream alive, it may happen yet.

The Nomadic Pinoy, they do save money living aboard their boats and in addition to that, the interest portion of their boat loans are tax deductible.
