A new compact camera with a more powerful zoom capability

I was looking for a compact camera with a greater zoom power than what my Canon Powershot SD800 IS is capable of. I found one with a 10x optical zoom with the Panasonic DMC-TZ5, a compact camera a tad bulkier than my Powershot which was on sale at Costco for $269 minus a $70 discount. I am a sucker for what I perceived as a good deal, so I went ahead and bought it. So far I am happy with the results that I am getting out of it and for a price that I considered a steal LOL.

I took a shot at this Monarch butterfly at a Nature Restoration project.

I took this shot....

and this one....

and I stitched them together into this photo of a small lake.

In the background (slightly left of the midpost) too far to notice, are two guys doing clean-up work.

I zoomed on them (10x) and this is the result. Probably with a top of the line camera, I can do better but I am happy with what I am getting with this compact camera. What do you think?

Wow nice shots (the butterfly and the lake w/ trees reflection) and pretty good deal for a 10x optical zoom. I have a sony cam with only 5x zoom, 8.1Mpixel w/ touch screen same price as yours but I bought it last year for free (I used my reward points and redeemed a circuit city gift card and bought one from them, hehehe). In this time of recession we better be wise and buy item that on sale or in pretty good deals :-)...or better not to buy any if we don't need them hahahaha (that's hard).

Missy, you are right in this time of recession we have to be a little more careful and do comparative shopping before we let go our money. However, the so called economic experts say we have to spend and spend more, to get us out of this economic downturn LOL.

RJ, I got that camera last February yet but I have not taken any worthwhile trip to trigger a shooting frenzy as I am wont to do when I am on the road. I've got to do my income tax returns now so I can find out how much money will be left for travels after my favorite Uncle gets his tax bite LOL.

Linnor thanks! And thank you for dropping by, as well.

wow, is the camera your birthday gift for yourself?:D i'm also using a Panasonic with 10x optical zoom...but i can't remember the model number right now (a senior moment!). enjoy your new camera!

Nope, I bought it to replace a backup camera that went kaput when my wife and I were on a trip.

I told my wife that for my birthday, I wanted an exotic female dancer to dance before me while I sip my drink. My wife said she'll just do the dancing and I better like it or I won't have a next birthday to celebrate. Is that true love or what? LOL.

docgelo, I'm glad you like 'em. I was in a relaxing environment then.

ces, thanks for the bertdey greeting.

Sydney, if I can be a fraction as good as you, I'll be deliriously happy.

I think you had a great deal with that camera. I also wanted a compact one so I think I'd opt also for this Panasonic TZ5. The pictures look sharp and vivid.

Very good choice!

Dennis, so far I am happy with its performance. I'm still trying to get more familiar with it though.

I think you made a right decision to buy this camera. Ang galing naman, stitching together those photos with the same hue is a job well done! The zoom lens is great.
