When the Young Ones Go Cruising

My college age niece and nephews from Northern California decided to reward themselves with a 4-day cruise to Catalina and Ensenada after the school year ended successfully for them (meaning no "D" and "F" LOL). Except for the youngest, they all live away from their respective homes to shorten the commuting distance to their schools and places of work. They all work and study hard, unfortunately, they also party as hard, if not harder. The young ones really know how to have fun.

At the completion of their cruise, some of them stopped by my place before driving back home. They told me I missed out on all the fun. I think I did. But then, I feel I'm too old for their kind of fun and I will just be acting like the Papa Killjoy that I am.

Here are some of the pics they took which they generously shared with me.

Most of them are first time cruisers. You can see from the face of this guy how surprised and excited he was to find out that this is their boat.

Long Beach

Catalina Island

Some of them decided to explore Avalon with rental bikes. I bet they did not cover much ground, they probably decided to hang out at the beach instead.

A section of the beach at Avalon, Catalina Island

This pic was taken at one of the watering holes in Ensenada. The girl in black is my niece and the others are girlfriends of my nephews.

That's one of my nephews getting a lesson in unconventional beer drinking.

I do not know the girl lying on the bar but I know she was not yet drunk, otherwise she would be down on the floor instead LOL.

Get off the pole guys, that's for the bikini dancer!

That's my Irish sister-in-law probably wondering where the boys are. I'm glad that there were elders with these guys to keep them in check....to a certain degree.

I asked them how much they lost at the casino. They said they won. Yeah, right!

Most of these guys are first time cruisers. I'm sure they'll be cruising again, hopefully in celebration of a graduation next time.

If it is any consolation, you know that they will just walk back to their staterooms instead of driving their cars to get home.

Relax! They are just babies.

We've been on this short cruise a couple of times before. It is a cheap and fun way to spend four days away from home. I would have joined them but my wife and I are already booked to go to eastern Mediterranean this August.

See you next cruise! I'll be there for sure if I can take the pole dancer home.

At least they are not part of those "famous" spring-break party I've seen on tv. Boy, those youngsters are really wild. Parang mga kabayong nakawala sa coral.

Grabe 'tong mga pamangkin niyo Mr. bertN! Parang sinunod talaga ang kasabihang 'Enjoy while young'. The good thing is, they're working while studying, hope I could do that as well.

I remember sa mga Day Tours kong ginagawa rito sa Australia, ako palagi ang pinakabata, mga kasabay ko palaging may edad na. I want to try cruising, too!

BlogusVox, you said it like it is, "Parang nakawala sa kural"... my exact words when I described them to my siblings the first time I saw the "gang" in action at one of my sister's party up north. I reminded my siblings how I kept a very tight rein on my own children when they were at school. I never allowed them to live outside of our home and enjoyed the liberties that my nephews and nieces take for granted now, until after they finished their bachelor degrees, at the least. Now, my daughter is a practicing lawyer in San Francisco and my son is a high school principal in LA county.

I'll have to lean hard on this gang to finish their degrees, kung hindi matatapos ang kaligayahan nila given the current economic situation in 'tate. Sabi ko nga duon sa gustong maging dentista, "Bilisan mo ang pag-aaral mo at baka wala ka nang maabutang ngipin sa aming mga oldies" LOL.

RJ, grabe nga! Given the educational opportunities in 'tate and the unqualified willingness of their parents to pay for their education, I expect them to finish their education while "they are enjoying their young lives". In the meantime enjoy yours, you already earned it with your sacrifices.

I have never been an all-out person, hence, my aversion to places where bars and drinks and boys abound. (Insert halo here) Yes, my parents were kind of conservative. I was not even allowed to have boyfriend until I was 18, I remember when i kept it from mom and dad when i got one, and the horror when Dad showed up in the bus terminal seeing me and the bf holding hands going home to Koronadal. Que horror! LOL. Drinks, bars, discoes, never been to those, until I joined a blogger's group, 3 years ago. At least, that's now me and the ex-bf (husband).

manang mana ang mga pamangkin sa uncle! im talking about the love for cruising (what were you thinking, bert? hehehe!)

it didn't look like they were first time on the big ship. all i saw was fun, fun, fun!

bertN said...

sheng, I don't think you missed a lot. If you did, it was not worth it. Your ex-boyfriend (AKA husband)is a lucky man. Tell him to take good care of you.

docgelo, it does not take much for these guys to have fun. Regrettably, I do not see any of them to be a potential Nobel prize winner. If any of them graduate summa cum laude, I'll kill myself. Which mean, I am going to have a looooong life LOL.

Fun photos. I remembered my trip to Boracay a decade ago nung mahal pa ang mga plane tickets kasi nagbarko lang kami, and we had the best time too. :)

bertN said...

Aleah, to others it is nakakata-cute.

Rizalenio, I've never been to Boracay yet. I'm looking forward to going there.

oohh, and i would surely do the same too! drink til I pass out. haha

this is one of the reasons why i got myself insured. in time, i can withdrew the money and treat my parents in a cruise =)

bertN said...

dong ho, watering holes in Mexico frequented by collegians on school breaks have a lot of weird drinking practices, most of them not legally allowed in the US... all in the spirit of fun.

rob, I wish I have the know how to improve my postings and make it more interesting like most of you guys do. Oldie na kasi tayo LOL.

Chyng, just drink within your limit. I once drink beyond my capacity and threw all cautions aside. In the morning I woke up without my wallet and my shirt, luckily I still had my pants on. Those where the fun and care-free days of my youth! I learned my lessons early enough to reach to the age that I do with the wisdom I learned the hard way during my wild days.

First time is the most memorable part of our life, and it will remain for the rest of our lives. .

bertN said...

bing,that cute!

Kathleen, a four-day cruise like this one usually costs anywhere from $299 to $399 for an inside cabin, depending on the date of sailing. Thanks for dropping by.

Gawwy, I agree. Thanks for your visit.

Very funny captions. I really love the one about them saying they actually won money. Great post!

Bob Crunch, thanks for dropping by.

they took the booze cruise - carnival's paradise? that was my first taste of cruising. no wonder the cruise bug bit me - so much fun on that ship - lots of college age kids everywhere on the ship.

bertN said...

Photo Cache, I actually prefer their company to old farts, like me LOL. We are boring, they are full of life. Their unbounded optimism and care-free attitude scare me, even though I used to be like them in my youth.

now I'm wondering when I'll do a cruise myself - looks really fun when you're with an equally-minded gang!

bertN said...

The Nomadic Pinoy, do it! It will be fun. Check out the Canada & New England cruise that sails from New York.

woah! Kung ako ang first time na yan I'm sure I'll have my picture taken a hundred times sa pareparehong background. hahah! Iba't ibang pose lang.

Sobrang liberated sila. haha! Ang wild. Baka nasabunutan na ko ng nanay ko pag nagkaganun ako. Scary. I think the lady lying on table tried what they call "body shot". Feeling ko lang.. hihihi!

bertN said...

Malditang "Kura"cha, tama ang Nanay mo! She meant well. Ganyan din ako sa mga anak ko - when they were in college, I did not allow them to drink or live outside of our home until they finished their degrees. I was harsh with them in more ways that you can imagine when they were growing up. They are now successful professionals and they said they love me now where they used to hate me then LOL. Frankly, I could care less as long as I was instrumental in their success.

Wow another cruise! I really envy you now....how I wish I can cruise again (how I wish hehehe)....looks like your niece and nephews had really enjoy the cruise. Grabe I never even tried the cruise in Ensenada when we used to live in Long Beach and I never been to Catalina Island, kakainis mister ko hehehe that time kasi di ko pa siya niyaya na gumala and we both don't know any places nearby na may mga scenic views or even cruises hehehe, ngayon thank you sa internet at wala na syang choice kundi magdrive ng magdrive hehehe.Ngayon ako bumabawi hahaha.

By the way, I visited LA last month ;-) I will post my pics maybe next week or so hahaha.

bertN said...

Missy, I'm sure you know you can take a cruise to Alaska from Vancouver. Give it a try. Kung sabagay overland driving is fun, too. I saw your pics in Vegas and I'm looking forward to your LA post.
